Privacy Policy
Last updated: 17 October 2026
Recapa ("the app") records meetings, classes and conversations and turns them into notes. It is made by an independent developer based in Taiwan. This policy explains what information the app handles.
No account
Recapa has no sign-up and no account. The app creates a random install ID on your device. It is used only to count your usage limits and to keep track of hour packs and rewarded-ad minutes, and it contains no personal information.
Your recordings and notes stay on your iPhone
Audio is recorded only while you press record. Recordings, transcripts, notes and photos you take in the app are stored on your device (and in your iPhone backup). We do not keep copies.
Transcription and notes
- On your iPhone: in the free version, speech is turned into text by Apple's on-device speech recognition when your iPhone and language support it and you have no cloud minutes from an hour pack or a rewarded ad. That audio never leaves your device.
- In the cloud: for Pro, when you use cloud minutes from an hour pack or a rewarded ad, for languages your iPhone cannot transcribe, and when you ask for notes, flashcards, a translation or a one-sentence request, the audio or text needed for that task is sent over an encrypted connection to our relay server. The relay forwards it to our AI processing providers, Groq (speech-to-text) and OpenAI (notes and answers, and speech-to-text when Groq is unavailable), and returns the result to your device.
- Our relay does not store audio, transcripts or notes. It keeps only usage counters (minutes, notes and translations per month) linked to your install ID or subscription, your remaining hour-pack minutes linked to your install ID, the transaction IDs of credited hour packs and rewarded ads (so each is counted once), a short-lived (about 1 hour) cached copy of Apple's answer about your subscription, and, for free notes and one-sentence requests, a daily count per IP address that expires after about 26 hours. Under their API terms, these providers process the data to provide the service and do not use it to train their models.
- Photos of slides or whiteboards are read on your device to pick out technical terms. Only those words, not the photos, may be sent with a request.
Recording other people
Laws in many places require everyone in a conversation to agree to being recorded. You are responsible for telling people and getting their consent before recording them.
Reminders
Reminders for deadlines and to-dos are local notifications scheduled on your device.
Advertising
The free version shows ads served by Google AdMob. Recapa only requests non-personalised ads and never asks to track you. To show and measure ads, Google may collect information such as your IP address, device model, operating system and how you interact with ads. Users in the EEA and UK are asked for consent through Google's consent message. When you choose to watch a rewarded ad, Google tells our relay that the reward was earned, together with your install ID. Your recordings, transcripts and notes are never shared with advertisers. Learn more in How Google uses information from apps that use its services and the Google Privacy Policy. Recapa Pro removes ads.
Purchases
Purchases and subscriptions are processed by Apple. We do not receive your payment details. To apply your Pro limits, our relay asks Apple whether your subscription is active, using the transaction ID of your purchase. When you buy an hour pack, our relay checks the purchase with Apple in the same way before adding the minutes.
Deleting your data
Deleting a recording in the app removes its audio, transcript, notes and photos from your device. Deleting the app removes everything. Since we store no recordings, there is nothing else to delete; usage counters expire after about 40 days. Remaining hour-pack minutes and the record of credited purchases do not expire on our relay.
Children
The app is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted on this page with a new date.
